Java (TM) 6 Update 38 is a legacy maintenance release of the Java Platform, Standard Edition 6. It provides the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and, when installed as part of the full toolkit, the Java Development Kit (JDK), enabling desktop Java applications and older web applets to run via the Java Plug-in and Java Web Start. This update chiefly delivered security patches and stability fixes available at the time of its release.

Important notes:

  • End-of-life: Java 6 has reached end of public updates and is no longer supported. Using it on internet-connected systems can pose security risks.
  • Compatibility: Intended primarily for legacy applications that explicitly require Java 6. Most modern software targets newer Java versions.
  • Browser support: Modern browsers have dropped NPAPI support, so traditional Java applets will not run. Java Web Start is also deprecated in current ecosystems.
  • Recommendation: For general use and development, install a current Long-Term Support (LTS) version of Java (e.g., 17 or 21) unless you specifically need Java 6 for compatibility.

Java (TM) 6 Update 38 is developed by Oracle. The most popular version of this product among our users is 6.0.
